Being Led of the Spirit

How does the Holy Spirit lead us?

Many people don’t know the answer to this, yet it is one of the most important considerations for us as believers. So I want to show you some of the ways the Holy Spirit speaks to us in my next few blog posts.

The first thing to understand is where the Spirit’s leading is going to come from. John 14:23 says:

Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

This is an interesting concept: you are going to become the habitation of not just the Holy Spirit. It says the Father and the Son. This is part of the Pauline revelation—Christ in you, the hope of glory. In other words, the Father and the Son will indwell you through the presence of the Holy Spirit. As 1 Corinthians 3:16 says:

Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

A lot of people say, “I just don’t feel like I have the Holy Spirit in me. I feel the same as I did before.” It doesn’t matter what you feel. What matters is what the Word of God says. When you are saved, you are made into a fit temple for the Holy Spirit and the Spirit of God dwells in you.

This initial filling of the Spirit is not the same as being baptized in the Spirit. When you are saved, the Holy Spirit is the agent of regeneration who does the miracle inside of you called the new birth. When you are baptized in the Holy Spirit, you receive His overflowing fullness in your life.

Picture it like this: you have two glasses on a countertop. One is half full and the other is overflowing because you let it sit under the faucet too long. When you’re saved, it’s as though you have a half-filled glass inside you. When you’re filled with the Spirit, the glass is pouring out all over you and anybody else who is around.

So when you’re saved, you become a temple of the Holy Spirit and He dwells in you. That means His leading will come from the inside of you. Don’t look for direction from without, because His direction will come from within you.
