America Must Support Israel
Earlier this week, over 5,000 Christians invaded Washington DC for the ninth annual Christians United for Israel (CUFI) Washington Summit. This summit hosted by CUFI is an opportunity for Christians to let our government know that we support Israel, and we urge them to do the same.
With the current war between Israel and Hamas, we knew our mission was extremely important. Now, more than ever, America needs to stand behind Israel. The conference included top experts from around the world, including Israel’s Ambassador to the U.S. Ron Dermer, Fox News Channel contributor Dr. Charles Krauthammer, and Senator Jim Inhofe, speaking on what is currently happening with Israel. A national Night to Honor Israel was held on Monday evening with Ambassador Ron Dermer and Senator Lindsey Graham as keynote speakers. On Tuesday, we made our journey to Capitol Hill to visit with Minnesota Senators Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken as well as our Minnesota congressional representatives. We brought the same message that the thousands of other attendees brought to their senators: stop Iran’s nuclear capabilities at all costs including the reinstatement of sanctions; stop Hamas from using Palestinian citizens as civilian shields; and stop Hezbollah from financing terror using the international banking system.
(We later found out that the U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation this past Wednesday that expanded Hezbollah sanctions. The bill is now headed to the Senate.)
Some highlights from the summit speakers included:
- “Israel isn’t the problem: Israel is the solution. The time has come to stop lecturing Israel and start listening to Israel; they have the answer. … Jewish people don’t occupy the land of Israel; they own the land of Israel. If America turns its back on Israel, God will turn His back on America.” –Pastor John Hagee, founder of CUFI
- “Those who get tired of defending their freedom will ultimately lose it. … We owe Israel thanks for allowing us to walk in Jesus’ footsteps safely.” –Senator Lindsey Graham, senior U.S. Senator from South Carolina
- The Israeli Defense Forces should be given the “Nobel Peace Prize for fighting with unimaginable restraint.” –Ambassador Ron Dermer
Many of you probably take time to pray for Israel; if you don’t, you should. Prayer, though, isn’t enough. We must have organizations like CUFI and events such as this summit to put action to our prayers. As my wife, Lynne, stated at the summit, “Prayer is essential, but prayer is not a substitute for righteous action.”
The sleeping giant of Christian Zionism is indeed awake.
